Eur., and technical-grade materials are frequently misunderstood by procurement teams who are not chemists. Sourcing the wrong grade delays production, fails audits, and in the worst cases triggers product recalls.
What Pharmacopoeia Grades Actually Mean
A USP or Ph. Eur. grade designation means that a material has been tested and certified to meet the purity, identity, and quality standards defined in the relevant pharmacopoeia monograph. A technical-grade material has not — and using it in a pharmaceutical formulation is a regulatory non-starter in any regulated market.
USP vs Ph. Eur. — Are They the Same?
Not always — and assuming they are is one of the most common procurement errors in pharmaceutical raw material sourcing.
Where they align
Many excipient monographs have been harmonised via the PDG — sharing test methods and acceptance criteria. BP is aligned with Ph. Eur. for most excipients.
